Syyspohja Salpa Line – A Historic Defense Line

Experience a piece of Finland's most significant building history safeguarding the eastern border!

The Salpa Line is a massive defense line built in the 1940s, immediately after the end of the Winter War, extending from the Gulf of Finland all the way to Salla. Although, fortunately, the line was never used in actual combat missions, it was the largest construction project of its time, and its existence served as a significant deterrent. Today, it is a magnificent and contemplative historical site to visit.

What can be seen in the Syyspohja area? In Syyspohja, Ruokolahti, a diverse array of Salpa Line structures can be seen in a small and compact area. The area has also been designated an official Saimaa Geopark site.

  • Dugouts and excavations: The area contains finished fortifications, such as accommodation dugouts, as well as collapsed and unfinished dugouts that have deteriorated over time. Water-filled dugout foundations and trenches can also be seen in the terrain.

  • Massive stone obstacles: In Syyspohja, you can walk alongside a tank barrier line built from massive stones, weighing up to three tons. The stones were originally quarried for the line from the nearby Haukkavuori rock.
