Imatrankoski is a truly magnificent historical gem. Since the 18th century, European artists, nobility, and even Empress Catherine II of Russia came to marvel at the rapids. Although the rapids were harnessed for hydropower production in the 1920s, its vast and deep rocky gorge is very impressive and awe-inspiring even when dry.

In summer, however, the rapids come to life in spectacular rapids shows. When the dam gates open, free-flowing masses of water surge into the gorge, accompanied by Sibelius' Karelia Suite or a lively rock symphony. The rapids are also surrounded by Finland's oldest nature reserve, Kruununpuisto. On its atmospheric trails, you can experience the charm of bygone eras and enjoy stunning views in complete tranquility.
