Parikkala – The strangest, most beautiful and most Karelian corner of the borderlands

Welcome!

Rajamailla

The tip of South Karelia. Towards North Karelia. Skirting Savo. Next to Russia.

Therefore, try to understand.

The maids of Parikkala ate whitefish from Simpele. Are some of them or any left in the lake? Or do they transform into Ladoga salmon, what kind of goblins dwell in the Hiitola River? Why in the old humppa song is it said that “Saari is an island even though it's not an island”? If you venture to Uukuniemi, do you believe a moose can swell into a bison? And what kind of rascal is the lion of Ruokolahti? Do they pull iron from the water in Rautjärvi and take it to the border, as they senselessly play war there? And where do you come from, oh, where are you going?

The ancient border region, with its joys and woes, welcomes you!

The people, who have witnessed West and East, wars and periods of calm, the rise and fall of the countryside, are not easily startled here, but ask the curious visitor more than an ordinary tourist has time or dares to answer.

Or says nothing at all.

You eat traditional food and pizza. You admire the beautiful Ladoga Karelian nature and close your eyes to the barking clearings. You experience a hospitable welcome and glance over your shoulder at the escape route.

For overnight stays with us, you can choose from lodging to homestays and even more lavish options. There's plenty to do, though even more opportunity to do nothing. Family vacation, business trip, romantic weekend – everything leads to stories. The rest is history. And when a Karelian invites you over, don't take it too literally.

An area where you can still experience nature and community like the locals. But you can also get away.

Long live that small difference!

All this – and for the daring, even more…

Parikkala, Rautjärvi, Ruokolahti. With their neighbors.

           RAJAMAILLA.

Make pasty or pie!

Welcome to Parikkala!

Here Highway 6 cuts through a landscape where no one is startled by small things, but nearly five hundred concrete statues stare at passers-by from the forest's shade. Come and see if you dare to stay the night.

What on earth is Parikkala?

The beauty of three parishes – Nature, silence, and just enough craziness

Parikkala is not some polished tourist trap, but a genuine piece of Ladoga Karelian nature, old borders, and unique village spirit. When Parikkala, Saari, and Uukuniemi were joined together, an area was born where there's plenty of space to breathe – and stories you won't hear elsewhere.

The proximity of Laatokka still feels present here, in the air and in nature. Here you can spot rarities at Finland's most famous bird wetland, Siikalahti, climb the mythical Pyhämäki, or dive into the clear waters of Pyhäjärvi at Papinniemi's sandy beaches. And when you crave something completely different, the world-famous Sculpture Park created by Veijo Rönkkönen ensures that your trip won't lack conversation starters.

Getting there and back

Main Road 6 crosses the parish, VR trains bring you directly to the center, and a rail bus stops next to Sculpture Park (Koitsanlahti). Village roads lead to the hills of Saari and Uukuniemi, to Pyhämäki, Papinniemi, and Juhola's bisons, and local taxis and Aivarossi's charter rides will take you there.

Transport Links

From the Stone Age to the Iron Curtain

Simpelejärvi's Stone Age dwelling sites, ancient Pyhämäki, and the border markers of the Peaces of Pähkinäsaari, Täyssinä, and Uusikaupunki tell of the region between East and West. The history of Parikkala, Saari, and Uukuniemi lives on in wooden churches, local history museums, and the fortifications of the Salpa Line.

Make kukko or a pie (or roast some bison!)

Parikkala maidens ate Simpelee whitefish – are there any totkut even left in the lake? No worries, no one has to leave us hungry. At the Rajamailla dining table, Karelian hospitality, Savo good humor, and honest fat meet.

Here we eat traditional food and pizza, delicacies gathered directly from nature, and Wild West treats in the middle of easternmost Finland.

Curiosities, the cry of the loon, and old borders

In Parikkala, you don't have to rush your holiday with a stopwatch around your neck. There are plenty of Things to Do, but even more room for doing nothing. However, if you decide to get up from the end of the pier or the bench in the main room, be prepared to encounter things you won't find anywhere else in Finland. You'll gaze at the beautiful Ladoga Karelian nature, close your eyes to the clear-cut areas, and wonder how on earth both bison and hundreds of yoga-posing concrete statues have ended up here.

Summer activities

When the summer sun warms the Salpausselkä ridges and the winds from Lake Ladoga blow across the border, Parikkala is at its best. Here, you don't have to queue for amusement park rides or fight for a towel spot on the sandy beach. A summer day can be spent on the water, in the forest, exploring the villages – or at the end of the pier, wiggling your toes and swatting horseflies.

Winter Magic

In winter, Parikkala quiets down so much that you can hear your own beanie rustle. When the real frosts of the eastern border are cracking around the corners and snow covers the hills and lake expanses, here you don't suffer from slush but enjoy a real winter. Put on your wool socks, put wood in the stove, and go outside – if you can brave the cold.

Nature Trails and Hiking Routes – Step onto the path, but don't cross the border!

In Parikkala's nature, the proximity of Lake Ladoga is visible and palpable: the groves are more lush, the birds louder, and history is underfoot. Here, the paths lead you to ice-age sculpted ridges, ancient sacred mountains, and wetlands, where nature plays the main role. Just remember to check the map – the eastern border is really close here, and you don't cross it for mushroom picking!

Care for Body and Soul – From the steam of the lakeside sauna to the padel court

In the borderlands, the best form of therapy throughout time has been a silent forest, a hot sauna, and a cold lake. But if merely lounging on the pier starts to bore you and you're looking for either guided relaxation or a good workout, we have remedies for that too.

From village festivities to cultural events: there's always something to talk about!

Although the noble art of silence and relaxation is mastered in Parikkala, people don't just sit around silently here. When a party is thrown at Rajamailla, people come from far and wide to catch up: "A mist sie tuut, a hoi, mihi sie määt?"

In summer, the municipality comes alive with markets, music, and Summer Theatre, and in autumn, people gather for harvest festivals and village events.

Market Buzz and Parish Days – The Whole Village Gathers

Parikkala markets and summer village festivals are places where you'll hear the best stories, taste local delicacies, and see how a peaceful border parish transforms into a lively meeting place. Here, greetings are exchanged with friends and strangers – or nothing is said at all if you feel like it.

Juhola Bison Arena's Gigs and Summer Evenings

In Uukuniemi, you don't just admire the scenery; you also dance lively. During Juhola Bison Arena's event evenings, gigs, and theme days, the atmosphere goes through the roof, and music echoes over the hills of the border region.

Summer Theatre, Concerts, and Culture

The magnificent wooden churches, local history museums, and outdoor stages of Parikkala, Saari, and Uukuniemi are filled in summer with music, laughter, and history. And just a stone's throw away also await the Savonlinna Opera Festival and Rautjärvi Hiitolanjoki Spawning Weeks – Parikkala is the perfect base for both!

Location and Arrival – Where are you coming from, and where are you going?

The legendary Kuutostie (VT 6) cuts through our municipality, and the tracks bring you directly to the village center. And best of all: here you can experience nature and the community like the locals, but you can also leave if you wish!

  • By car – Along Kuutostie towards the east (and you can turn too) Main Road 6 brings you here from the southern fronts as well as the northern hills. Your foot moves to the brake already at Veijo Rönkkönen's Sculpture Park and Hotel-Restaurant Kägöne's log castle, and on smaller village roads you'll find the landscapes of Saari and Uukuniemi, the sandy beaches of Pyhämäki, Papinniemi, and Juhola's bison.
  • By train – Directly from the pier to nature VR's long-distance trains (InterCity and Pendolino) bring you from the south in a few hours to Parikkala station, from where you can walk to Siikalahti bird tower. Savonlinna's rail bus, on the other hand, stops right next to Sculpture Park (Koitsanlahti).
  • By bike, boat or on foot – Lake Simpelejärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi invite you to the waters, and winding village and ridge roads are a cyclist's dream.

Distances (or how far from everything are we really?):

  • Parikkala is an excellent base from which you can draw your own borders also to the neighbours' side:
  • Rautjärvi & Simpele (rapids of Hiitolanjoki): approx. 20 km (we are in the neighbourhood!)
  • Punkaharju & Lusto: approx. 30 km (in fifteen minutes to the ridge landscapes)
  • Savonlinna (Opera Festival & Olavinlinna): approx. 60 km (less than an hour by car or rail bus)
  • Imatra & Ruokolahti: approx. 60 km (an hour south)
  • Helsinki: approx. 320 km (about four hours by car, even more leisurely by train)
